This event is part of the event series "New Directions in Cultural Inquiry".
‘The climate crisis is also a crisis of culture, and thus a crisis of the imagination,’ wrote the author Amitav Gosh. The lecture is based on this fundamental insight. For even if we understand global warming rationally on the basis of scientific findings and facts, the implications for cultural notions of how nature and humans relate are extremely challenging. For this reason, social reactions to the climate crisis message are often contradictory or even in denial. The talk will use examples to discuss what it means to conceptualise the climate crisis as a cultural problem and how the arts can help to enable a different perception of the climate crisis, one that is not only rational but also symbolic and emotional. The talk argues how the path from knowledge to action must also be a path from aesthetics to action. At the same time the question will be posed what contribution the humanities can actually make here, where they tend to be decelerating and questioning as opposed to focusing on solutions and applications.
